Brendan Fraser's makeover in the whale  is one of the year's most talked about  performances Frasier plays Charlie a  housebound 600 pound English instructor  who teaches students remotely with his  camera covered in the Darren Aronofsky  directed picture in this painful drama  he is also attempting to mend his  relationship with his estranged daughter  the actor appeared in an interview and  talked about some of the behind the  scenes secrets of the movie stay tuned  to find out all of them starting off  with how he landed the role Aronofsky  seems to appreciate the tortured Soul  character Trope and he's also become a  master at thinking outside the box When  selecting his leading man he had a  specific game plan for determining who  would portray the titular whale much as  he did with Mickey Rourke in the  wrestler which restored roork's career  he stated that he felt Darren had not  seen much of what he had done however he  was searching for an actor who people  felt they already knew and had hadn't  seen in a while but would like to see  performing again sort of a long lost  family thing and that's exactly what he  found in Frasier Frasier had to smirk at  the kind of backhanded compliment that  comes with fitting that category but he  didn't hesitate to collaborate with  Aronofsky the actors physically imposing  stature and broad shoulders also aided  his cause the actor admits to feeling a  little creatively intimidated when he  first met Aronofsky and he was open  about the task he faced as a director  and filmmaker which was to develop this  Persona not only from the inside out but  also from the outside in how does  Charlie behave and look and how would  this be accomplished he told him that he  had been looking for performers for a  long time and while some were closer to  Charlie's body type he needed to find a  performer who could wear the entire  costume and makeup required to get him  into character up next the  nerve-wracking opening scene of course  there are no no spoilers but the film  concludes with a breathless emotionally  draining five-minute scene so it created  an unusual mood for an actor to skip out  onto the stage in High Spirits to start  a conversation while the audience was  still processing what they had just  witnessed Frasier seeing this devised a  very clever strategy he entered wearing  an olive green coat and matching  baseball cap and brought out a dog from  inside his coat yes he had gone to the  desert with a cute little puppy  backstage at the awards Gala we found  out later that night that the dog was  named Peewee and is a teacup Yorkshire

Terrier Frasier lightened the tone by  revealing Peewee before handing the  puppy over to a loved one in the  audience to begin the movie discussion  the seasoned actor made a wise and  needed move before talking about some  important stuff each day he revealed  that it took roughly four hours to get  into the Charlie costume and one hour to  to come out of it the character should  be between 500 and 600 pounds however  unlike other films where characters wear  a fat suit for a small joke the  authenticity and attention done to avoid  that unseemly area or the most important  to everyone moving on Brendan Frazier  talks about his transformation there was  only one problem once Frazier was inside  the apparatus he needed to make his way  from the makeup chair to the set the  challenge was getting from the 70 or so  steps to the set and he had to be  wheeled there by a fairly muscular  person named Ben then four or five more  guys served as his pit crew keeping him  watered and changing out the ice bags  and tubes that ran up his back he melted  seven or eight bags of ice per day the  actor laughed and said it made him  giggle because his body melted seven or  eight bags of ice daily that's something  you get to hear only some sometimes  covid-19 introduced a challenging aspect  to the suit's construction normally  while creating a prosthetic you  collaborate closely with the actor  Gathering technical measurements and  molds but no one was allowed to come  that near to Frazier while filming this  movie the conventional method for  placing an actor in that prosthetic  would be to mold the actor by pouring  goop on the face to form a cast but  because they didn't have access to each  other it had to be done virtually that  meant the producer Jeremy Dawson came  and spotted Frasier in his driveway with  an iPad and scanned him as he moved  around the actor but the dog got in the  way and ruined the shot and Adrienne  Moro the prosthetic makeup designer in  Montreal used that knowledge to  construct Charlie in a 3D virtual model  it was unclear if Peewee was the culprit  in question coming up how kovid helped  the production in some ways Frazier  revealed that he joined the team in  January 2020 and we all know what  transpired in March 2020 like most  projects there was a chance that it  wouldn't happen due to covid but because  this is a one-room production with only  five actors they could carry on while  taking extra precautions he explained  that the prospect of kovid improved the  performances in this particular story  when they made it it was five characters  in one room on a sound stage in Newburgh  New York at a former Motorcycle Museum  and he believed that had something to do  with why the movie turned out so good  because of kovid they were extremely  cautious of one another and so devoted  to each other's safety and worry that it  shows on the screen in a way no one  anticipated seeing that secret  ingredient will be greatly appreciated  by the audience and cast alike more on  the final takeaway Frazier stated that  working on this film transformed him and  that is the simple purpose he hopes it  achieves with spectators he stated it  well when he said that when we watch a  work of Cinema art film tale or drama we  experience a collective emotional  release or something you feel something  and you may not know why but you feel it  and it changes you he hoped it would  influence the way you thought about  things before coming here today and as  it did for him it will reposition some  pieces in your heart spirit and how you  think about things in the future okay  Brendan don't make us cry following up  how was the suit created Adrian is a  long time colleague of Darren and has a  solid track record of working with  exceptional individuals he could build  makeup and costumes out of Prosthetics  and collaborate with the actor he had he  hoped for him to possess the body of a  man weighing hundreds of pounds What  mattered was that the makeup and the  surrounding Machinery followed the rules  of gravity and physics it has vitality  and sentience so when a performer wears  it it doesn't appear like Halloween  costume makeup you can see the  expressions and the performance shines  through the producer used an iPad to  scan Brendan in his garage and send him  the results Adrian cleaned it up and  molded it like one would with Clay all  facial and body Prosthetics were created  on the computer in the same way that  they would be done physically they had a  lot of leeways since they could change  them rapidly then they gave them to  Darren who could make immediate changes  moving on the Brendan Fraser controversy  despite the actor's critical success the  whale writer Samuel D Hunter has open  opinions about Brendan Frazier's casting  issue Darren aronofsky's psychological  Thriller based on Hunter's play of the  same name follows Charlie a 600 pound  recluse English Professor he tries to  reconnect with his teenage daughter  after abandoning her and her mother for  his gay boyfriend whose death  contributed to his deadly weight gain  Frazier's portrayal as Charlie in the  whale has received tremendous praise yet  one aspect has divided critics and  moviegoers Samuel D Hunter addressed the  Brenton Frazier casting controversy in a  recent interview with people to discuss  the film's broad release the playwright  and movie co-writer acknowledged the  horrible portrayal of obesity in other  forms of filmmaking still they defended  the use of Prosthetics in the film for  the story subjective many have argued  that the employment of such effects is a  step back in Cinema's progress in  portraying plus-sized persons many also  think that Aronofsky would have been  better off casting an actual obese  person in the role on the other hand  some have defended Frasier's casting in  the whale taking a similar approach to  Hunter in acknowledging the story's  intention and its use of Prosthetics  which takes a more empathetic approach  to such a character rather than  continuing the trend of negatively  stigmatizing overweight characters  finally the whale hits the box office  hard the U.S box office for a24's drama  the whale topped 10 million dollars on  Saturday a significant achievement for  an indie film in the epidemic era those  ticket sales would have been less  spectacular in pre-coveted times however  the Art House industry has struggled to  recover as adult consumers remain as  picky as ever regarding film choices  attendance for Prestige dramas such as  she said triangle of sadness tar and  women talking ranges from disappointing  to abysmal the Fable men's Steven  Spielberg's newest isn't far behind the  whale with 13 million dollars to date  while filmmaker Martin mcdonough's dark  comedy the Banshees of inishunan has  pulled in 9.1 million dollars however  when it comes to 2022 releases only one  indie film a24's time bending everything  everywhere all at once became an  undeniable economic success grossing 100  million dollars worldwide it generated  360 thousand dollars from six locations  the highest per theater average of 2022  and the second largest for a limited  release since the covid-19 epidemic  began the whale expanded to 600 screens  in its third weekend 625 in its fourth  and 800 screens in its fifth weekend  with a staggered distribution in the  following weeks by week 6 it had reached  1500 venues and pending Award  nominations it will continue to add  theaters in the coming year that's a  wrap for this video thanks for watching  what did you think of Brenton Fraser's  performance in the whale and which  behind-the-scenes secrets were most
